The Pit

The Pit is an installation built around a conversation pit, a void that is both physical and conceptual, functioning simultaneously as a site of gathering and a space of collapse.

Clad in mud on the outside, it evokes the raw materiality of natural cavities and the scarred landscapes of rare earth extraction, referencing the physical infrastructures that underpin artificial intelligence. Inside, a video projection reveals an endlessly expanding AI-generated terrain: a simulated pit evolving through continuous cycles of prediction, erosion, and collapse. The work examines the recursive logic that defines generative models, in which artificial intelligences increasingly feed on their own outputs. This process leads to what is known as model collapse, a condition where synthetic media becomes self-referential, producing content that gradually loses coherence and degrades in quality. This mechanism parallels a notion of cognitive collapse: as dependence on AI grows, human thought risks being externalized, digested, and flattened by opaque algorithmic systems.

The conversation pit, originally conceived in interior design as an intimate and welcoming space for dialogue, is reimagined here as an environment mediated by conversational AI, transforming dialogue into a closed loop that reinforces existing biases and self-replicating logics. By stepping into the pit, visitors physically enter a recursive system where algorithmic models shape discourse, distorting thought and reshaping social narratives. Through this immersive descent, the work probes the tension between fascination and dread, questioning what it means to relinquish agency to intelligent systems that mediate perception, memory, and reality itself.

Daniel Shanken is an artist working across disciplines to create installations, video, sculpture, sound, and media. His practice focuses on the interplays between technology and cognition, tracing their ongoing effects on the environment, consciousness, and culture. Shanken has exhibited internationally at venues including ICA London, Art Basel Hong Kong, Whitechapel Gallery, CCA Glasgow, Nottingham Contemporary, CFCCA Manchester, V Art Center Shanghai, and Kiasma Helsinki. He earned a PhD in contemporary art practice from Kingston University in London, culminating in a solo exhibition at Stanley Picker Gallery in 2023. He is currently undertaking a three-year postdoc at UmArts and UMA in Umeå, Sweden.
